One of my favorite tricks is Dave Solomons Cutting Tens which I learned from Bill Malone On the Loose volume 3. It’s a perfect fit for me because when I am asked to perform, it’s always for a small group of 3-5 people which this trick is perfect for.
Here a short explanation of the routine: Cutting Ten
You have several spectators try to cut exactly ten cards and you instruct them to set the cards they cut down and “we’ll count them at the end”. Their focus is on trying to cut exactly ten cards which is great because they are totally shocked by the climactic ending where you show that they didn’t cut exactly “ten” cards but they did cut to 10, 10, 10 and 10, showing the top card of each pile.
The trick has many strong points.
- The spectators do all the work. The focus is off you and all on the spectators so when the climax comes they are shocked to see what “they” did. In my experience anytime I involve the spectators in a “hands on” way it creates a stronger lasting impression.
- It’s a great for a large audience, its easy for everyone to follow and the ending is shocking for those involved and those just watching.
- It can be done with any deck, at anytime. The setup can be done directly in front of the spectators.
